Whilma’s Filipino Restaurant opened its doors in 2009, but Chef Whilma Frogoso’s culinary journey started when she was just a young girl. Growing up in the Philippines, Whilma learned to prepare classic Filipino dishes and family recipes from her father. Although she would eventually make a career as an accountant, her passion for cooking never left, and she continued to hone her skills in her home kitchen.
In search of a better life, Whilma, her husband Jimmy, and their four children, Rafael, Patricia, Carlos, and Kristina, moved to the United States, and settled in Searcy, AR. Whilma’s desire to share the rich culture and flavors of her native home with the community in her new home was the foundation for Whilma’s Filipino Restaurant.
Now the Frogosos work together to support a common mission: serve delectable and authentic Filipino cultural foods that evoke the welcoming spirit of the islands.
What is Filipino Food?
These days, many of us have had the opportunity to sample a range of tasty international fare. Yet many Americans are unfamiliar with the distinct and delicious cuisine of the Philippines. So, what exactly is Filipino food?
Drawing inspiration from Chinese, Spanish, Thai, and Malay cuisines, Filipino food is a fusion of flavors and textures. Sweet, sour, and salty combine to create meals that will delight almost any palate. While pork and poultry take center stage in several of the most popular dishes, Filipino cooking is versatile and can be prepared to accommodate many dietary requirements. Yes, vegetarians and vegans can happily dig in!
Just as important as the taste of the food is the experience that accompanies every bite. Eating Filipino food is traditionally a communal affair, and this is why we strive to ensure that everyone who walks through Whilma’s doors feels like family.
